Important Tax Dates

If a deadline falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the last day to file is automatically extended to the next business day.

 

January 1

Date that determines taxable and exemption status.
January 15 A reminder postcard is mailed around January 15 to all Randall County Property owners whose current year property taxes are unpaid.
January 31

Current year property taxes are due by January 31.  For taxpayers who are 65 or older or disabled, the first property tax Installment Plan payment is due on or before January 31 along with the application.  If this payment is not made by January 31, then no installment payments may be made that year.  A new contract is required annually.

February 1

All unpaid property taxes become delinquent.  The schedule for penalty and interest is as follows:

February ……7%
March …………9%
April …………11%
May …………13%
June …………15%

March 1

Additional penalty and interest accrues in March.  See penalty and interest schedule listed in February.

March 31

The second payment for the Installment Plan is due on or before March 31.

April 1

Additional penalty and interest accrues in April.  See penalty and interest schedule listed in February.

April 15

Last day for property owners to file renditions.

April 30

Deadline to make application for many types of total exemptions.  Homestead and disabled veteran exemptions may be applied for up to one year after the taxes for the year of application became delinquent.  Over-65/disabled exemptions may be filed as soon as the applicant becomes 65/disabled or becomes owner of a residence.
May 15

A May notice is mailed around May 15 to property owners whose property taxes are unpaid.  This notice is a reminder that an additional 20% collection fee will be added to the base amount and penalty and interest of property taxes that are unpaid on July 1.

May 30

Last day to apply for agricultural, timber, or wildlife productivity appraisal without penalty.

May 31

Deadline for filing written protests to the Appraisal Review Board (or by the 30 day after a notice of appraised value is mailed to the property owner, whichever is later).  Late protests filed after the deadline require a determination by the review board that good cause, such as serious illness, exists for the late filing.

The third installment payment is due on or before May 31.

June 1

Additional penalty and interest accrues in June.  See penalty and interest schedule listed in February.

July 1

An escrow agreement/payout agreement can begin during this month for unpaid property taxes.  This escrow agreement/payout agreement will allow monthly payments.  Please call the tax office for the county that you reside in for additional information.

July 31

The final (4) installment payment is due on or before July 31.  As a reminder, you will need to reapply each year for the installment payment method.  The 20% additional collection fee is applied to all unpaid property taxes.

August

The taxing districts hold public hearings on their budget.  The effective tax rate, rollback rate, and proposed tax rate for each district is published in the Amarillo and/or Canyon newspapers.

September The taxing districts adopt their budget and tax rates.

October 

Property tax statements are usually mailed the first week in October.

December 31

Mortgage companies generally pay by December 31.  If deducting property taxes on your income tax return, the property taxes must be paid by December 31.

January 31 Last day to pay property taxes without penalty and interest of following year
